Or possibly holiday apartments

I also think that www.tripadvisor.com is a good choice to have a look at hotels. I personally used the information given in that site before travelling abroad last summer and I must say that every personal opinion given in those pages were absolutely true.
Places to visit? Go to:
Margitsziget (Margaret Island); beautiful; it´s a pedestrian island with wonderful flowers, fountains and paths for walking or riding bikes.
The Parliament: incredible; it´s similar to the British Parliament in style, but I find the Hungarian one more beautiful, especially if you see it from one of the boats from the river Danube.
The Castle of Buda: a "must"; we went up in the funicular; then, walk around its gardens and visit the inside exhibitions. Go to Matthias Church too, it´s beautiful. Near it you´ll see the Fisherman´s Bastion; I have no words, it was one of the more impressive places. Great Views of Pest from there.
Geller Baths!! What a spa! You can enter either with a visitor´s card, which allows you to have a look at everything, or if you have the time and the money, have a bath in its gorgeous swimmingpool or take a Thai massage!
Saint Stephen´s Basilica: you MUST enter! And go up to the dome and you´ll enjoy wonderful views of Buda.
Andrassy Avenue: Spielberg filmed some shots of his film "Munich" in that street in August 2005: I was there!! That street is a cultural heritage for mankind.
The Market Hall: incredible! clean, varied and so, so nice; it´s near Geller Baths; buy real Hungarian paprika, the best. Near there you´ll find the Caves and the Citadel and the Liberty Statue (I did like it too)
The bridges; my favourite was the Chains Bridge; but Elisabeth Bridge was very nice too as well as the Liberty Bridge (the nearest to Geller´s too)
Vaci Utca: the shopping street; it´s really long and partly pedestrian
Of course, get on one of the boats which will take you through the Danube; we did it at night and it was unbelievably pretty!!
I could go on and on, but anyway, I´m sure you´ll find information in google; I did so to prepare my trip there
Go to:
www.tripadvisor.com
This is a GREAT site to find out about hotels because people write reviews of places they have stayed. From the reading I've done there, many people suggest going directly to the hotel website to make reservations (cheaper rates than expedia, etc. but try them all!).
Have FUN! (I'm off to Warsaw, Krakow and Prague the end of November!)
Budapest itself: The castle (vár), Parliament (Országház), boat trips along Danube (summer only), cog-wheel railway (fogaskerekű vasút), childrens' railway (gyermekvasút) with walking areas around it (e.g., Elisabeth's viewtower - Erzsébet kilátó), the oldest subway line in Europe, several museums. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/budapest. for more.
- North of Budapest lies Szentendre (accessible by suburban railway "HÉV" with Public transport museum and Open air museum ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/szentendre. , http://www.bkv.hu/muzeum/szentendre.html. )
- Further north (accessible by a normal train in direction Szob) is Visegrád, an old Hungarian royal castle with a historical museum ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/visegr%c3%a. )
- Going East, there is a Habsburg royal castle Gödöllő, one of the residences of the last Emperess Sissi ( http://www.kiralyikastely.hu/enmenu/inde. )
As for hotels, try http://www.utisugo.hu/?application=hotel. (Hungarian search engine, hope the link will be permanent). It is all in Hungarian, but names, addresses and prices speak for themselves :-) . Hostelling International (probably the cheapest offer) is here: http://www.hostels.hu/
