Answers:
yep i can suggest a route for you BUT i don't know where you want to go north/south or west (you cant go east) little details like that will help you get a answer
ok now i can help
i suggest if you want to see a lot you go west to charleville then to barcaldine -longreach-winton-cloncurry-& from there Mt Isa if you want then east to the coast to townsville then up to cairns then follow the coast back to brissy OR reverse of that that way you get to see the coast & the interier call into small pubs along the way & meet the locals (you can drink coke if you are driving)they will talk to you about the local area & things to see around there
HAVE A GOOD & SAFE TRIP
I think, realistically, if you don't want to venture around the Brisbane area for three weeks, you can only go North or South. North will take you towards the Barrier Reef. South will take you towards Sydney and Melbourne. West wouldn't be much fun beyond a couple of hours west of Brisbane because the country turns to desert. Pick up a Lonely Planet for Australia from your local library to give you idea of what to do in the Brisbane area, en route to Cairns, and en route to Sydney and Melbourne.
Make sure you get down to Melbourne and drive along the Great Ocean Road, on through to Adelaide! Don't forget to bring plenty of film and keep your eye's open for the Victorian Drop Bears !
Go to www.rac.com.au Great site will give you journey times, places of interest along your route as well as places to stay

Godd work the essentails of queensland for overseas visitors
*Fraser Island- via hervey bay
*The Whitsundays - Via airlie beach
*Cairns
I would also suggest if you are driving try the following
Drive brisbane to hervey bay- 4hrs drive
Day trip to fraser island- of a couple of days your choice
Drive to rockhampton- another 4 hours
use this as a jump point to great kepple island (via yeppon)
Drive to mackay or airlie beach (4 or 5hours)
Day trip to the whitsunday islands
Drive to townsville- about another 4 hours
Day trip to the reef (less crowded and closer than cairns reefs)
Day trip to magnetic island
Drive out to charters towers for the day (see a small slice of outback queensland)
Drive to cairns 6hrs
or stop in tully, mission beach , port hinchinbrook these are all around half way from townsvile to cairns
hope this helps
If you've only got 3 weeks then you're right. Going to North Queensland - Cairns , Cape Tribulation and the Atherton Tablelands is the best thing to do. You can do so much there, see so much, lots of activities and the barrier reef is a MUST. Have a great time.
If you have got a camper van, then you aint going to get very far in three weeks. Oz is vast. It takes hours to get anywhere by plane. We got around on Qantas internal flights and got cheap accommodation at every destination and hired a car. You will see much more this way.
If you are in Brisbane, do not miss out Steve Irwins Australia Zoo. It is awesome. Have a gr8 time
