Why is it motel in america, and hotel over here?

freaks

Answers:
A motel isn't the same as a hotel, either here or in the US. A motel is far inferior, far cheaper, more like a crappy Travel Lodge.
you say potato y say potato..doesn't work when you write it down, does it?
there is motels in britain too,not that many but they are here.
theres hotels AND motels in america.
There are both.
There are Motels here too.
A motel has exterior entry for the rooms, while a hotel has them inside.
In the United States we have both "Motels" and "Hotels". Motels are typically one-story, occasionally two, and are located for the convenience of a long-distance driver on a road trip. Hence the name "MOTEL = Motorist Hotel". Motels generally have limited amenities and are not particularly posh.

Hotels are located in tourist areas as well as convenient for business travellers. They are usually multi-level and contain such additional amenities as restaurants, small shops and a more "posh" decor.

While these are not "etched in stone" definitions, they are fairly accurate.
I agree with heathen
We have hotels here in the US. They're taller than motels.
Same difference. "Motel" is just a contraction for "Motor Hotel."
You do get motels in this country, a motel is usually near a main highway, like the motorway over here and interstate over there.
There are both. Hotels are usually a lot nicer than motels.
Forget about motels and hotels. I know of a great European hostel you should go stay at.

us motels are like our b&b's - not as formal as hotels.
In America a motel is usually a 1 story run down place that is pretty cheap ususally not a chain just family owned like the Bates motel on psycho.A hotel is a more fanicier version more then one story that has a chain.Like the Hiton or Hoilday Inn..

The motel is like europes Hostels
Motels have individual entries, Hotels have a lobby entry.
motel is an american contraction of Motor Hotel = motel.
a motel therefore is automobile oriented -catering to the lifestyle of a car-based nation. will often have parking spaces right outside a ground floor door that enters directly to the room.

a hotel is more posh with interior halls and multilevels
We have both in America. My understanding is that a motel is one story and hotels are multi-storied. Also in general motels tend to be less expensive but offer fewer ammenities (higher-thread count sheets, swimming pool, complementary continental breakfast, room service, etc) than hotels.
They are two different things.
Motels aren't the same thing as hotels. We have both in the USA.

A motel is an establishment in which the rooms are usually accessible from an outdoor parking area and generally only provides a place to park and sleep.

A hotel is an establishment in which the rooms are usually accessible ONLY from indoors and also generally provides food and entertainment such as a conference room.

Freak
No sure where 'here' is, but a motel and a hotel are two different things, at least, they are in the US and Canada. A motel is a motor hotel, designed for people who are driving, to come in and rent a room for the night. They are typically located close to major highways, all have lots of parking, and minimal cooking facilities as the assumption is the guests will only be there overnight.
A hotel is usually a larger building, located in the center of town or near a tourist attraction or a business center or a hospital or something of that sort. It doesn't cater to highway traffic, and it is usually many stories high. Hotels are usually much more luxurious than motels, and offer such amenities as pools, spas, gym facilities, dining rooms, a bar, conference centers etc.
So they really are quite different things.
By "over here" I guess you mean the UK, with it's flat instead of apartment, bonnet instead of hood, lorry instead of truck, bangers instead of sausages, etc, and that disgusting Marmite.

There are a very great deal more linguistic oddities in England than in the US, for certain.
There are hotels in America too. A motel is where you can park close to your room and not have to go thru a lobby. In a hotel you usually have a parking area and have to go thru the lobby to get to your room.
MOTEL- Cheap shi*te, for the mentally deranged, or holiday on a budget. also a place where high school kids go to get laid.
HOTEL- classy place where you go on holiday and pay rediculis prices to stay in, or buisness men go to cheat on there wives! IN UK WE mainly stick to hotels but hey they are motels too.
In Oz..we have..hotels and motels and hotel/motel...so whose the freak now.mate !!?
In the US mtels were originally one or 2 story buildings where you could drive up to the room door Motel was Motor hotel. Most of the Motel chains have turned into simply hotels that folks sometimes still refer toa as motels.
