What should a female traveller in Dubai wear?

Are there any restrictions, is it advisable for a female to cover up as much as possible? What is the norm for female dress in Dubai?

Answers:
Hi .. I live in Dubai (originally from Scotland) and, whilst it's true that Dubai is the most westernised of the Emirates, you should still be careful to cover up to avoid insulting the Muslims. Right now it is Ramadan (will end around 23 October) and even more important during this time to cover up. When I say cover up, I mean long sleeves, below the knee skirts etc. (not totally!), however, at your Hotel's beach etc. you will get away with swimwear/bikini etc. visit some sights for more info:

Dubai is a massive tourist hot-spot. It's so westernised you can probably walk around naked and nobody would notice.
A burka
My friend went to Dubai and was really worried about this but when she go there she found she had nothing to be worried about. Just wear what you normally wear. She said there were many girls that wore spaghetti strap tops, skirts and shorts. She just said the men leer at you a lot, but no one spits on you like what has been said before.
girl should wear not tooo short clothes
You'll be fine. It's a modern society with many westerners. It's not Iraq. Check out yahoo travel guide.
Just dress very casual. Little or no jewelry especially. Jeans. Don't call attention to yourself. That is a region that is unstable right now...
No restrictions.. but it is a conservative country.. so I would dress as if you were going to meet your boyfriends consertive parents.. ( if you had a boyfriend that had conservitive parent).. long sleeves. or atleast to the elbow.. longer dresses...
long sleeved cotton clothes - skirt/trousers fine but not short - below the knee. sandles are fine. take a headscarf with you incase you want to visit a temple or draw less attention to yourself. its amazing how much easier it is to travel with a headscarf on - less staring! i wouldn't bother with makeup you will only sweat it off anyway! jewellery is fine and a ring you can slip onto your ring finger again helps get rid of unwanted attention. :)
Re some of the answers above, I'd be fascinated to know why a glimpse of my triceps would be considered indecent.

Normal European wear EXCEPT in a Mosque.they all have signs out side telling you how to dress & most have spare clothes for tourists
It is always advisable to cover up when visiting a muslim country. This applies not only to women, but men as well. On the beach, or in hotels, the locals turn a blind eye mostly, but it is always wise to respect other cultures, especially if you don't want to draw unwanted attention to yourself. With it being ramadan at the moment, you should be even more careful, especially if venturing off the beaten track. Some guidebooks suggest that women travelling alone should wear a wedding ring (even if they are not married) and carry a photo of a fictious husband in their purse to help push away any unwanted advances if the hotel waiter decides to move in on you. If you are travelling with a male companion then that will ease your trouble a lot with any natives who take exception to your choice of clothes. Dubai is not as strict as other Middle Eastern countries, they are quite used to westerners.
Listen to what Sam's Mom says. You should walk around the town with knee length skirt and cover arms etc as she has said. It is a good idea always to carry a headscarf. Anyway, that's not why I wanted to answer this question. I wanted to say that, irrespective of any dress code, Dubai is hot. I mean seriously hot and it is a very, very serious sun. You may think that Majorca is hot in August but that could be "pleasantly cool" if Dubai gets the heat going. You will need to cover yourself up because your fair skin (even if you have dark skin but unaccustomed to the sun you are about to meet) will be frazzled in approx 5 minutes flat if you do not cover up - Why do you think the beaches always look deserted! Do not even THINK about sunbathing unless equipped with about factor 5 zillion and even then only for about 10 nanoseconds. So, cover up or it will be "thank you and goodnight" to your skin!
when i was there i just wore what i would normally wear on holiday, tho when going to the shops i wore a skirt instead of shorts, the men will look at you no matter what you are wearing.
Topless is not allowed, else anything is ok.as long as you are not too revealed.
Anything you like. I went to the UAE for 6 weeks and just wore what I usually were. No worry, just wear what you want to wear. You'll see, nothing to it. ***Hope you enjoy it***
no nothing like that i know it becaz i live in dubai
