It really depends where you live in SA right now. Unfortunately we still have friends that do live in SA and what they are saying is not always very complementary - though I admit that those living in Durban or Cape Town are a lot more positive. It also depends on your age range - as you get older people start looking at what will happen when they retire and whether or not they can get a job if they are made redundant. That is an issue that I find is most often in people's minds - once you are over 40 and you are made redundant it is almost impossible to get a job again. Also the rate of violence in some cities makes very sad reading - I always say to people that should go and visit South Africa - it is beautiful and full of character BUT I would not work there again!
I lived there for 15 yrs too.
I felt safer on the streets of Joeys than I do in London.
I didn't join the "chicken-run", I got transferred back here by my employer, but still have buddies over there who say life is still pretty cool. Different in some ways, maybe.
I don't believe there's that much more crime than before.
Very friendly people. Nice weather. To buy something is not so expensive as in European countries.
It's a great country with corrupt politicians.!
First we had the National party - corrupt with apartheid.!
Now we have the ANC - CORRUPT with THIEVES.!
South Africa has no luck.!
The only great leaders we have had in the last 100 years was Nelson Mandela and Jan Smuts.!
ANC ALL CROOKS.!
S.A is still suffering from the effects of apartheid. Their are not to many whites(in percentage) that are struggling to survive in comparison to blacks and it is supposed to be black peoples country. And even when they do find it hard they can just pack up and leave for a better place. More needs to be done to address the imbalance.
I still live and love it in South Africa. Yes, I agree, we are branded with a bad reputation, but what do you expect. All you hear and see of us, is bad.

And yes, we do have a corrupt government and a high crime rate, but we are still a great country. We still have the best biltong, beer, and sunshine.

I am proudly South African and I love my country. I won't let anyone bad talk about it.
I love SA! I was born and raised in SA, lived in America for a while, but still went back home as I love it there. Even now, I'm travelling through Europe but still going back home.

A place, or country is what you make of it. I'm from Durban, but I've also lived in Jozi and I felt safer there then I do in London. Walking through Oxford Street is horrifying with all the pickpockets and muggings.

At the same time, the economy is not good, that affects everything else. Look at today's news in SA. www.iol.co.za One of the headline stories is Where are South Africans emigrating to? Number one country being the UK, then USA, Australia and New Zealand. People are not going away because of crime, they are leaving because of the slumping economy.

The rest of the stories we are hearing are the same as everywhere else in the world, for some reason its easier to pick on the little countries.

Lets ignore what everyone else is saying about SA and build it up.

I'm proudly South African!
There has been a steady downward trend in standards since 1994 and an upward trend of crime and HIV/AIDS. The problem seems to lie in an incompetent Government who have no concept of governing which is not surprising considering the background of their politicians..The inner cities have fallen badly into disrepute, decay and are most unsafe after dark. Squatter camps abound on the City outskirts and are particularly unsightly on the N2 in Cape Town leading from the Airport. Crime and particularly violent crime is crippling the Country and despite the denialist version nowhere in the Country is safe.Murders, rapes, car jackings, cash heists and attacks on Shopping Malls by armed gangs, etc take place anywhere and anytime in South Africa. Cape Town has the highest per capita murder rate in South Africa and one only has to read the news sites ( which in any event are Government controlled) to experience the daily horror. There has been a profileration of crime sites started by South Africans to highlight the crime to the International community in effort to force the Government to take action but they remain intransigent. Many white people have fled the Country taking valuable skills with them but more interestingly a recent survey of students of all colours indicated that 80% will leave the Country when qualified citing crime, corruption and lack of opportunities. Rather sad to watch a once prosperous Country deteriorate into a haven for criminals and head down the same path of all African Countries with the end of colonialism.
Well let me see. Would you go to Iraq for a holiday.
Would you have gone to Vietnam at the height of the war there.
3000 US troops killed in 3 years in Iraq.
Government figures BRAG that last years murders were down from an average of 26000 in years gone by to only 21000 last year. This is a dramatic improvement.
The whole of the EU murders added together would not come to HALF of that. That is 25 countries.
The trouble is that those that are left do not see it as they have lived with it and see it as normal. Plus it is so common it does not make the news. My daughter who lives in Cape Town has had 2 boyfriends murdered and a next door neighbour for her mobile.
I was speaking to a friend yesterday who was saying that in all he has had 19 friends either killed or attacked/hijacked. Last week a woman was shot in a top mall in Cape Town. she was having a smoke outside her place of work. How can one place be just as safe as another when in Italy or say Sweden or Ireland there are around 200/300 murders a year compared to 21000.South Africa has more murders in one year that in the troubled 20 years in Northern Ireland By the way arch did you read this these are government figures not mine. I have never supported apartheid.
Unfortunately it is all the expats and those who want apartheid back who are bad mouthing the Country and giving it a bad name. Crime is no worse here than any other place and we are going through aperiod where the Whites are unwilling to give back what is rightfully ours. This has led to confrontations and now our Government is going to stop dealing with them and get our land back for a start. Many Black people suffered at the hands of Whites and continue to do so but our Government is sorting the Country out so we can be normal like other Countries.
Predictably, some schmuck answered this question with the staple 'It happens everywhere else.'
What is going on in South Africa is a classic case of animals running a zoo.
South Africa is a beautiful country with wonderful people. Yip we do have are problems, but so does the rest of the world. To those people bad mouthing South Africa, look around your country might even be in a worse state than South Africa.
i live in sa..was in cops for 18 years..i have never seen all the crime that the people in UK , US and all over see on every street corner here in SA..I dont have alarms, attack dogs armed response and that kind of stuff..i suggest that they who see all the crime on every corner come and show it to me..yes there is crime but not to the extent that they portray it on here.SA had 300 000 house breakings last year..england had over 1 million in 2004 and the populations are more or less the same at 45 million
i garentee you if you come back you will be SHOCKED to see how it has grown! you will see awesome cars, sky scrapers, hight technology and FRIENDLY people! COME HOME!!!
As a single female I travelled around SA by myself for 2 months the other year and encountered no problems what so ever. I found the people to be friendly, the scenery spectacular and the food amazing.

No where in the world is particularly safe and so you need to look after yourself wherever you may roam.
Every country in the world has it`s problems.S A has got serious problems, but still better to live in than living in Europe.at least you can see the sun rise every morning, and i will be returning early next year.once a boertjie always a boertjie
Oh, you all make me very home sick! Yes once a boertjie always a boertjie, or rather boerenooi. I've been here in UK 6yrs and can see daily how the crimes we have down there is coming here, wish I could give these people tips on personal security, in other words be alert and watch your backs and don't have valuables in sight, especially in your parked car, put them in the boot! At least I'm going to visit again in Feb 2007 for a few months, never enough time to enjoy the sun, friendly people and yes, biltong and boerewors on the braai!
My parents moved to Cape Town and I visited them in March. it is so beautiful. the most beautiful place on the continent!!
