Yes, I've done it several times, but don't forget that the subject must look like an extra from zone horror, so pay attention or the passport office won't accept the photos if they look human
That's what I am planning to do. As long as you have a white background, clear picture of yourself and its the right size then why not?
They'll say no, but that's all they've ever had from me and there were no complaints. Make sure they're good quality though.
I don't see why not - I've done that for photos required for other official documents and intend to do likewise when renewing our passports in the near future.
Yes, just make sure you follow their guidelines, they're really strict. You have to have a clear background, face forward completely, don't smile or open you mouth and loads like that.

you can so long as they are correct in terms of size, content, and a white back ground etc. i recently had mine taken in a shop and the passport people sent it back as it was too light. be careful its not to bright or dark. you can get an information sheet at the post office telling you the rules if your not sure, and it has photo examples of whats right or wrong.
