Try buying a split ticket. Have a look where on route the train also stops and buy your tickets from a to be then onto C, I know its not logical but it can make the difference from £50- £100. You do remain on the same train , your ticket will just have a number of destinations marked on it.
sometimes getting one way is cheaper than a return, and yes i mean a one way back aswell, try it you might be surprised.
Buy an advance purchase ticket on line. cheap tickets are not available at the last minute you have to buy them at least one week in advance
