despite what you guys think, the UK is a big place. where abouts are you going? If your flying into london then theres hundreds of attractions you could go and see in one day.
It depends on when you are and where you can get to and back from in a day. You have posted this in the 'London' section so I'm guessing thats where you are.
If I were you I would get as far away from London as possible and suggest you fly on Easyjet from Luton and treat yourself to a day in a coffee shop in Amsterdam.
depends where you live i suppose, no good saying Edinburgh for example if you live in London? Go on give everyone a clue where you're from. I love Mother Shipton's Cave near Harrogate but that's no good to you as a day trip if you're from Cornwall is it?

Go to Canterbury. It's near enough not to fall asleep on the train but far enough to have different weather than London. It has the most amazing gothic cathedral where Thomas Beckett was murdered. Streets are narrow and buildings small. It has a lot of good pubs and it's quite cheap.
Rutland Water. It is the largest landmade lake in the UK and is surrounded by all the villages in Rutland (the smallest county in England). There are some great views and plenty of quaint village pubs around to stop for a bite to eat, or just take a picnic. You can also hire a bike and cycle around or just walk, and there are play areas for the children too.

Hampton Court Palace is stunning
Stonehenge, of course--and the nearby town of Salisbury is charming
Bath is about as far as I would do for a day trip. If you are a Jane Austin Fan, it is a must.
Canterbury is a lovely town with the famous cathedral. Good shopping too.
Brighton is down on the sea. The Royal Pavilion is stunning, but the town itself is rather seedy, in my humble opinion.
I wouldn't bother with Dover, it is a big bore.

If you are stopping off for one day/night at LHR then go into central London and take a bus tour - find a pub with real ale and the return to your hotel to sleep prior to your flight out. If you are really clued up you can attend a concert, opera or theatre performance too - what do you want from what is arguably the greatest cultural capital in the world?
