Winter starts at the winter solstice which is around the 21st or 22nd December this year.
When the clocks change one hour
Nope - it's Autumn now. The 'seasons' never keep to date as such, but roughly it's:
Dec, Jan & Feb = Winter months
Mar, Apr & May = Spring months
Jun, Jul & Aug = Summer months
Sep, Oct & Nov = Autumn months
. ish!
No, its Autumn. Winter solstice happens around 22 December and marks the start of winter. From then on, the days start getting longer.
Jillybean's right. I can't wait. I love the winter. I'm definitely a winter person.
the winter solstice is the peak of winter, not the start of it. It's the shortest day of the year, it starts getting light earlier from that point on, leading into spring. That's the half-way point of winter!
its winter from this sunday.
I think it officially starts this weekend after the clocks go back - it will definitely feel like winter with it getting dark at 4:30! Oh, and the Winter Soltice doesn't mark the START of winter, it marks the MIDDLE (hence why the days start getting longer after 21st/22nd December)
It's the UK.. it's officaly winter all year round! (My feet are freezing!)
All the flowers and shrubs in bloom in my garden would suggest that it is not! Haven't yet had the central heating on either, this autumn.
However, according to the Met Office, the first official day of Winter 2006, is Friday 22nd December.
Not until the clocks change!
What makes so many of you think that winter starts when the clocks change?
Was there no winter before the introduction of daylight saving hours? What will happen to winter if the goverment choose to get rid of BST?
Winter officially starts on 21st December as stated by many others (sometimes it is the 22nd depending on the timing of the solstice). This is not the mid-point of anything.
No, we are still in Autumn, and a very warm one it is too. The clocks go back next Sunday morning marking the end of British Summertime, but we don't really get into winter until the winter solstice in mid December.
nope but its officcially cold!
Not yet 22nd Dec and I LOVE THE WINTER !!!
Winter runs from 29th October to 28th/29th Fenruary
