What's the cheapest way of getting a decent hotel in BANGKOK?

is it better to book online in advance, or to pick somewhere when i arrive?

Answers:
Booking online is definitely the better choice. cos when you book the room over the counter, you will be charged the rack rate.
Try asiahotels.com and hotelasia.com can't really remember which give the best, but a lot of online offers going on there. Only thing is,all rate's in USD.

Avoid D'Mar hotel though, had several bad and haunted experiences there.

Have Fun!
Online I'd say !
bang a ****.
better online
everything is done online now
Try logging on to www.Asiarooms.com. It's wiser.
online. i suggest grand diamond or pathunam princess. these are very great i've tried them before. pathunam princess is located at the shopping center, mahbukong, so its convinient (:
If you are looking for luxury at an affordable price, try looking at www.luxurylink.com. They have many deals in there, maybe you'll find more than a decent hotel!
Book into any good hotel but never use the taxis that park outside them.
book in advance, pref. online, and try to ask your travel agency if they can offer you packages for a city tour. it's a great city to see and you'll be out most of the time so you don't have to go all-out on your hotel accomodations. i love the street food, the tom yum goong, the chatuchak weekend market, MBK, and the ladies..
i go there a lot, it is easy to get a good room for £10 a night, best hotels have royal or grand in there name, just go to the hotel, ask the price, and always, always ask to see the room! there are dozens of hotels there, over two weeks i might change hotels two or three times, very cheap and very easy to do,
These are the best Bangkok hotels with average rate less than $100:

1. Davis Bangkok
2. President Solitaire
3. Holiday Inn Silom Bangkok
4. Buddy Lodge Hotel
5. Bossotel Inn
6. Amari Atrium Hotel

Try www.hostelworld.com,hope it will help.
use trip advisor and book at least two nights before you go
why not contact ur travel agent.. they have hotels counterparts in different countries.
Depends on your way of life.
In case you are adventurous, you will find it interesting, to look at number of hotel rooms and then decide.
In case you like to be safe, then go for advance online booking.
Cheapest Way?

Book in advance and compare! Sometimes, the hotel's websites has an internet special so it is always good to check the rates there. Like Stefy and Dave S. mentioned www.asiarooms.com is a great websitte for rooms in Asia. Out of habit I still check the rates against www.expedia.com or www.orbitz.com or www.hotels.com Oh yes, check the reviews, for construction or remodeliing, or problems. You get people from everywhere in the world making comments and most are helpful.

I stay at the Emerald Hotel on Ratchadapisek. Rack rate on the hotels website is USD 77 or so. At AsiaRooms.com it USD 50-57 depending on the date. It is not in the heart of all the smog and noise, 5 minute walk to the subway station, 12 minute trip to Asoke and Sukhumvit, another 10 minutes to MBK center or 7minutes to the Emporium. It is a 4 star hotel It's not all glitzy but a well put together place and the money you save is not spent on subways or skytrain. Stay away from Taxis if you can.

Good luck
online
Stay at the Malaysia Hotel---best prices and service. Great location too.
I recommend you make the advance booking through the travel agent as they always have special rate from the hotel. If you book online, then you have to pay for the rack rate which is higher than via travel agent.
As recommended, check asiarooms website. You have the pricing and reviews by guests, as well as pictures and map for your reference. Attractions nearby are also included. So you can make your wise decision. Plus some hotels offer further discount when booked via the net. So maybe it pays to use the net to make your booking/enquiries. Even get picked up literally and figuratively.
Everyone seems to be saying book online, but if you're willing to take a gamble you might get a better deal just turing up at a hotel. Of course it will depend on availability, but a friend of mine arrived here recently, and having been quoted a price of 4,500 baht per night on the telephone and web prior to arrival he magaged to get the same room for 2,300 baht at the front desk.
It will not work every time but it can happen.
go to the TAT they help the tourist and they dont charge and you normally get a discount through them. just specify no carpets cos of flees.
Take a look at the Asia Rooms website. Generally cheaper to book in advance. Better if you know somebody who lives in Bangkok and can book for you locally
