How many lakes are there in the lake district?

one of my local radio stations got this one wrong by saying just 1

Answers:
One

The only body of water in the lake district which has the word "lake" in its official name is Lake Bassenthwaite.

All other bodies of water in the lake district are "meres" (like Windermere, Grasmere), "waters" (like Wastwater, Ullswater) or "tarns" (like Loughrigg Tarn, Sprinkling Tarn). Smaller bodies of water, often little more than widening in rivers, are sometimes referred to as "Dubs" (eg. Tray Dub).

Mere, Water and Tarn also mean "lake" so it is incorrect to use the word "lake" as well.

Because there is a town called Windermere and also a lake of the same name, it is common (but incorrect) to refer to the lake as "Lake Windermere" to distinguish it from the town. As "mere" also means "lake" this means that anyone saying "Lake Windermere" is actually in effect saying "Winder Lake Lake".

Anyone in any doubt should go to the Ordnance Survey Website at http://www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/oswebsit. and enter the word "Windermere" in the "view maps online". Zooming out, you will see that the lake is simply named "Windermere".
loads of little ones, windamere is the biggest and most well known.
there is only one body of water which has the word 'lake' after it's name on the lake district.

all the rest have 'water' or something different after their name.
There is actually only one in the Lake Disrtict National Park. (Lake Windermere) However there is also Lake Brassenthwaite (Excuse spelling!)

The rest are all officially Waters i.e Derwent Water / Ullswater / Wast Water etc
its funny, because only one is called 'lake, but the rest are other waterbodies, so i forgive you if you are confused, here is a list:

Bassenthwaite Lake
Buttermere
Coniston Water
Crummock Water
Derwent Water
Devoke Water
Ennerdale Water
Grasmere
Haweswater Reservoir
Hayeswater
Loweswater
Rydal Water
Thirlmere
Ullswater
Wast Water
Windermere
technically there's only one "Lake" as such - the rest are "meres" or "waters" (as in Windermere and Derwentwater).
