Is it necessary to have a current passport to travel to and from Spain and France?
My friend wants to travel by ferry with me to France, then to Spain but he doesn't have a passport. He does have a UK driving licence. Will this do or must he have a passport as well?

This was the case in the mid 90s ( I did this when I lost my passport in Rotterdam in a canal but showed my university card) - actually - if I remember they didn't ask us to get out of the car and were not bothered. This has now changed - so have I - I am now working in UK immigration

I live in France and i cab tll you that the ferries definatelyrequire a passport.however, the budget airlines only ask for photo ID. obviously it is legal for photo ID to be accepted otherwise the airlines would not be allowed to accept it.with the ferries it is purely their policy.
