....Yes I did it back in 2003. You didn't say where you will be arriving, I presume Sydney? I would recommend flying into Perth first. The reason for this is..Sydney is usually the first place people arrive in Australia, therefore more people are looking to buy cars, so the prices are higher. For example I was looking for a car in Sydney and the people selling were usually asking too much money for what they were selling, unserviced and very high mileage, 300,000+ KMS. I decided to fly across to Perth and bought a car there for around half what they were going for in Sydney. I then drove it up to Darwin, down through the middle and back to Syney and sold it for twice the price I originally bought it for.
OK, I would recommend not buying a VW Camper van as they are air cooled and the roads in Oz have a lot of dust on them which is not good for the engine. Also I would not buy a Ford Falcon, this is the most common car used by backpackers, as they are 4.0 liitres, therefore drink too much fuel and are old. Buying a 4X4 (Nissan Patrol or Mitsubishi Pajero) is a great idea as you can go just about anywhere, rough terrain and even on sand. But they are expensive if they go wrong.
Still with me? If you can't resist buying in Sydney, go to the multi storey car park in the Kings cross area, this is where all back packers try to sell their cars. Do not buy from the back packers garage not far away from the car park They will charge you way too much.
If you can buy in Perth, there is a car auction near to where all the hostels are, buy one from here, excellent value, its where I bought mine from. Also it had never been used by a backpacker, so it had low mileage 90.000 KMS
Fuel when I was there was around 1$ Aus/Litre I did 26,000 KMs. Travel with other travellers to share this cost. Hostels are around $20-30 per night. Food is cheaper than here, especially eating out. Beer is about the same cost as here.

not sure what you mean by oz..?
anyways, here in the states, my hubby and i took trip from florida, across texas, thru navada, thru california, into oregon across to yellowstone, back down to texas, and back to florida in our RV and it cost us probably 3000.00$ in gas and maybe 1000.00$$ for food and other expenses...
The price of fuel is very unstable at the moment.
It is now ranging between $1.00 and $1.70. depends on what state your in and if you are in the city or country. The best day of the week to buy fuel is between Monday and Wednesday. When Thursday comes it can go up as much as 10 cents a litre.
Here are some other places to look at if you are buying in Sydney.

When they pass you hold on to your steering wheel firmly and take a breath. But don't worry you do get use to them.
