Unless you have a desire to visit Yale or an interest in insurance, I would say skip New Haven. Baltimore is about 3 hours away by car and even closer by plane/train. I would be a good day trip to see the harbor area, the aquarium, eat some crabcakes, see "The Wire" being filmed or depending on the season catch a football or baseball game.
If your are outdoorsy NYC has mountains and beaches an hours drive away.
Portland, Maine. Excellent waterfront and night life. Check out the Old Port.
Go to Bushkill Falls in Pennsylvania. It will take a couple hours to get there and you'll find stuff to do for 4 or 5 hours. The weather is cool enough this time of year and the colors on the leaves are beautiful.

Also depends what you like to do for the day as winter sets in plenty of places to go for a day of skiing. If you are a gambler can get a daytrip bus down to AC or up to foxwoods, just look for the senor citizens
