How much is a safari holiday in south Africa?

Answers:
I am also from Newcastle and travel to SA two or three times a year. As most of the previous answers indicated the best way is to "un-package" your trip.

I personally feel car hire to be a good idea, but my 75 year old father who came the last time, prefered flying between destinations.

There are some fabulous hotels of the highest international standards, but personally I found that I could get a good level of comfort the back packers just as safe and much friendlier. Back packer can be a bit of a misnomer as you can usually get private room with AC if you want it, room service, most have pools

www.hostelworld.com was pretty good.

I think the most imporant thing is to try and organise the first night most hotels and back packers will collect you for free from the Airport.

Have a good time and if you want any specific advise email me kid_chocolate@yahoo.com
For the safari element of a holiday, there are normally three prices.

One for black locals, one for white locals and one for tourists - this is not a race issue, but an income issue.

For a whole holiday anywhere between £1500 and £3000 per person depending on the level of luxury required.

Hope this helps
Wazzup bru! A safari to S.A. is actually quite cheap depending on where you look and with who you fly. But once you get here you can buy allot for cheap as the Rand, Dollar echange rate currently sits at R7 to the Dollar. Your airline tickets will be the most expensive part. The cost of your tour package will also depend on where in S.A. you wanna go as the Western Cape is more expensive than the rest of the country and also very commercial.
check out www.ndaba.co.za they cover a lot of Safari trips.
Plus rather look into a private game lodge, much better then your Kruger Park trips. Kruger Park is boring. (in my opinion)

Also go to www.thompsonstours.co.za massive tour operator in South africa, they should be able to help you.

That answer regarding white, black prices...where did you hear that? I worked in tourism in SA for 4 years and never heard of that.
can be expensive but well worth it. it is a holiday of a lifetime. Do you have room in your case for one more?

have a fab time!
You have so many different safari's that I cannot give one price.

A cheap safari that pickes you up in the morning and go look at some animals and drops you off in the afternoon again, will range from 250 Rand to 500 Rand. Depending on which park you are in.

A luxury safari, with several days of accomodation etc. That will definetly be a whole lot more money. Probably around 10.000 Rand, with everything arranged.
It all depends on several factors:

1.There are 2 prices one for south african citizens and one for tourists. The tourist price is greatly higher. So if you have a friend that lives in South Africa then have them book the Safari and pay them back. I know this because I am US citizen and I was trying to have my honeymoon in SA. (I married a South African). I tried to book a Safari but they quoted me ludicrous prices, but when my wife went to the same safari lodge they quoted her a much lower price.

2. The exchange rate is also a factor when I went it we 14 rand to t $1 US, right now it is right around 7rand to the dollar.

3. Depends on what Safari Lodge. Some are mom and pop game farms and others are quite extensive, such as you hint at the game ranger that you want to see leopard, if you are on a mom and pop farm most likely you will not see leopard at all.but on a extensive lodge they have tracking devices on all there animals, so they are easy to find.
Depends, the girlfriend and I spent a week in a Safari tent in Umfolozi game reserve for about the equivalent of £220 pounds, it was rustic, had everything we needed, including some interesting night visitors as there are no fences, it was great fun.
And we saw just about all the animals in that period. There have been some sound advise already about getting a local friend to book for you and you just pay them back, I would stay away from places that are to popular and private reserves. If possible try and book directly with the authorities that oversee the parks, like Kwa-Zulu Natal Parks Board at Queen Elizabeth Park in Pietermaritzburg, you should save a good bit that way.

Also avoid if possible travelling to and from SA in Jan and Dec as the fares are sky high with Saffas going back and fore for Christmas at home.
That depends on a lot. How long would you like to be on a Safari for? Where would you like to go? How many people will be joining you? And more. Contact a travelling agency and find out more information from them.
Is paying with your life too much? A number of these game resorts have been attacked by criminals and the roads to and from are also unsafe from criminals. The Tourist sites are disingenuous when it comes to disclosing the violence and crime so try www.crimexposouthafrica.org which is the only reliable site to get a true picture of the place. Hoever, even with it's collapsing currency it is an expensive destination as most things cost more than they do in the UK but safety and security is the big issue and you would be better off trying somewhere like Kenya.
