I'd like to hear form any paraplegic persom who has done a long distance flight or?
fairline crew who might have tips about how to make it easier. I am paraplegic and need to fly from Heathrow to Perth West Austr. next month. I need to stay in my own wheelchair. I cannot afford Buisiness class - and I can't do steps to first class anyway. Please can anyone advise how it might be easier for me through customs with my own chair, and how to make it all go smoothly?

I'm sorry i cant offer any advice from personal experience, however can i deduce that you haven`t been on a long haul before, or maybe even on a plane ?
I have been on several long haul flights before and i have seen folk in their own wheelchairs. I flew with BA and Quantas a couple years ago (in case you are going with them) and they were both great at looking after everyone, the standard of care, even for a " regular seated " passenger was immense, so don`t worry too much.
I think the key to this problem is communication, and although you will have told them about your needs when you booked, its time to speak again to the airline, get names of who you spoke to and if you act quick enough, a letter too, and speak to them again a few days before departure. This goes for the customs too, approach them now, via the phone. I am certain that you will allowed to clear customs in a separate area from everyone else, making it more comfortable for you too.
Finally, don't forget a covering letter from your GP for any drugs you may need, even if they are in your checked in luggage. This, i do have personal experience of, as up until 2 years ago, i had to take needles, syringes and little glass vials abroad with me, and still have to take several kinds of drugs.
