I'd like to hear form any paraplegic person who has done a long distance flight or?
fairline crew who might have tips about how to make it easier. I am paraplegic and need to fly from Heathrow to Perth West Austr. next month. I need to stay in my own wheelchair. I cannot afford Buisiness class - and I can't do steps to first class anyway. Please can anyone advise how it might be easier for me through customs with my own chair, and how to make it all go smoothly?
Answers:
I have been a parapalegic for 5 1/2 years now and i have traveled to several different counties, my furthest flight was to london (I live in minnesota USA) as far as staying in your own chair you dont not need to, you can get a regular seat on the plane like everyone else (just tell them when you order your tickets you are a parapalegic and they will put you in an isle seat toward the front of the regular class) They will get you into your seat by what they call an isle seat and then they will put your wheelchair down in the belly of the plane. Going threw customs is actually easier because they take you to the front of the line (and whoever you are traveling with) and they they just do a little check of you and the chair, it is quick and easy. All in all it is pretty easy process, but if you have any more questions i would like to try and help you with them. You can email me at krisbohanon@yahoo.com
They sometimes have special wheelchairs for inflight usage.
Perhaps go to the airline website, and search for passengers with disabilities. It will tell you information you wish to know.
You might also want to request on-ground airport assistance if you need to transfer planes, or make any stops to make sure that the airline staff are aware that you are on the flight. If you are being helped by airport staff, they must keep the plane for you.
There shouldn't be any problem going thru customs, especially if you are with airport staff. They will take you thru the quickest route.
