Were is a good place to live that is ok with housing prices and within a decent commute to london?

Im looking to get a new job and have seen one in london and was just wondering about commuting to and from the city.I live in York at the moment and think that would be to far. I also have the opertunity to live in birmingham and am not sure what the commute would be from there. Any help on the matter would be very much appreciated. Thanks.

Depends how much you want to pay. East London (stratford, leyton, leytonstone) currently relatively cheap to buy, but will explode with the olympic development. Most people in London rent - I've just bought after 5 years renting down here.
mate u can try Hayes and harlington or may be slough
The train time to London Euston station from Birmingham New Street is about 1 hour 40 minutes and current modernisation of the track will soon cut that by another 20 minutes.

I don't know if you know Birmingham very well, but some parts really are very nice these days and the city centre has undergone massive redevelopment recently. Honestly you'd have to see it for yourself but I love the place so if the commute isn't too long you should come here.

There are some great places to live in the centre if you like city living, and areas like Solihull, Sutton Coldfield and Edgbaston are very nice if you want to live a bit further out. Property prices are much lower than in London but probably higher than in York.
A commute from brummy land is out of the question.

As for ok with housing prices.. simple solution: rent

the whole of the belt around london is very expensive.

Also lots of chavs., St Albans is an oasis of beauty in the middle of Chavsville.. (watford, luton, hatfield etc!) Now these places aren't necessarily rough or dangerous. Just chavvy, (not up to Miltoin Keynes Standards quite yet tho!)

Just a 20minute train journey to kings cross as well. I'm moving back there when i get myself a family.
Forget commuting to London from Birmingham for a start. It would add about 5 hours onto your day.

Years ago I moved down to London from Scotland and was in much the same situation as yourself. What I suggest to start with to get yourself on your feet is to flat-share with people. There are people all over London looking for a new lodger.

O.K it's not perfect, but it really does help to keep the cost down. You also get to meet new people and integrate straight away.

As for areas to live in, it depends on your budget. I myself live in the Docklands which is close to the city and is a very nice area to live in. Between me and my mate it cost £850 per month in rent.

I can't really speak for other places, but normally the better the area the more you pay. If you go outwith London you'll pay less in rent but probably end up paying about the same through travel expenses. You'll also have less time in your bed in the morning.
I leave in Reading, just about half an hour by train to London's Paddington. The environment there is fantastic. A very well equipped town. you can find almost everything in Reading. However the house might be a little steep in some areas but if you price range is between 150-250K.I doubt there is problem getting a nice cosy place to stay. Other areas like Slough is also affordable. Areas in Essex like Basildon or Loughton so also be considered.might not be as well equipped than Reading but it is near London and without the price of London homes.
I reckon your best bet is to get somewhere about 10 miles out with a nice quick train into London - it'll be cheaper and less hectic than living in central London - places like Barnet, Bromley, Hendon or Richmond (thats not cheap but very nice) are all about 15-20 minutes away by train.
AlysL has a very good answer -
Reading is a really good choice and commuting to Paddington is far better than commuting to King's Cross.
Basingstoke was built as a overflow for london so it has good transport links into the city. You are almost guaranteed a house/flat within walking distance of the station as they have just built loads of new property around there. They built these properties for the commuters into London.
