Why are flights from the UK to Nigeria so expensive?

Flying from the UK (I'm in Scotland) to Nigeria and vice versa is ridiculously expensive and it seems that it's only Virgin Air and KLM who do the journey. It's not that far, but requires about £700 or more for an economy return that's not even direct. I could literally go to the other side of the world for less. Why is it so expensive? Does anyone know of a cheaper airline or route to get there?

Answers:
try afriqiyah airlines , although they fly from gatwick they are reasonable
try 0207 258 7900
Have you checked out the price of jet fuel lately? Maybe if you bought a row boat it wouldn't cost you so much to go there.

Have a nice day!
Have you tried orbitz or priceline.com?
I think that since not many people do that journey, it is not in high demand and coyld be out of the way for some pilots, which could explain the costs. For a cheaper fare, i don't know if i can help you there. On orbitz i found a London-Frankfurt-Lagos for 655 USD.
Now why would you want to go there? Flights are expencive because there simple arent enough people travelling there to make a profit.lets face it Nigeria isnt really a holiday destination!
Because Nigerians are criminals
because the british goverment are trying to keep the white population in britain just in case you decide to stay there. bet the flight back is cheaper!!
basic supply and demand rules. demand is low, as is supply thus price is high,
have u tryed Air France
it think's it less expensive when you make a reservation ahead of time
