What's the best backpack to take on a years trip around Australia?
I'm looking for a secure backpack as i am carrying mp3, camcorder, phone etc. If people could certify the name & make of the backpack this would help.

I had a Karrimore pack for travelling which I found reliable & comfortable. As for the security of carrying mp3 etc you can now get a secure cable type of shell to put your pack in which cannot be cut so your bag is safe.
I had it recommended to me that should not carry more than 1/3 of your body weight or you will damage your back, so take this is to consideration when looking at the size of the pack.
Try an outdoor shop such as Millets or Blacks as they have all different types of pack & their staff will be able to help you make your choice.

Go to the Kathmandu store in London Fantastic hard wearing outdoors equipment. I got my back pack from the Kathmandu store NZ It's taken me everywhere and it still looks brand new!
Ideally the largest you can carry comfortably, and with as many exterior pockets as possible. Don't just go buy a name go and try a few on. Enjoy you lucky devil.
buy a crappy old worn one, that way you will look like an experienced traveller who is streetwise and is unlikely to fill his/her backpack with expensive electricals
I'm going in February 2007 and I am taking my trusty 80 liter North Face Ruck Sack. It's 5 years old and has never let me down!!
I would certainly recommend, North Face, berghaus, Karrimor and also Lowe Alpine.
