If you want to stay in a hotel I suggest you the Eurostars International-via Nazionale no.46. It's a very well located one, very safe, so you'll can enjoy of your time during all day and night. As for the start, just at the end (or beginning)of via Nazionale is Piazza Venezia and the gorgeous monument called IL Vittoriano (Altare de la Patria). From here, during 3 months you'll have enough time to see all the beauties of Rome.
the Italian embassy is a good place to start
If you can't speak Italian you will be in deep dodo. (opps missed that you could?)
You should be able to find an Italian board to talk to people over there and get some information, directly.

I got lost in Milan once and it was terrible!
Check out www.lonelyplanet.com its a travelling website could have useful info for you good luck
try and find a flat to rent for that amount of time save up enough money to pay for the rent and the cost of living, transport costs, go to the jobcentre for help finding a job,
i have lived in a lot of coutries around the world and always been able to find work, don't be too choosy about what work you do, even pot washing is better than not working, be prepared for your life to change when you go home after 3-4 months living in a different land it will seem very boreing, good luck

If you are from the UK, it wouln't be too difficult as far as a VISA goes. if you have enough money, I think the best idea would be to just do a course of something you are interested in. Renting an apartment could be quite costly, but you can maybe post an ad on the internet and share it with some other student.

It would't be difficult to find a job, because you also speak Italian, but I don't know how hard it is to get a working Visa from the UK (not too hard, I guess, as it is a UE country).

Good luck
