Traffic lights in America?
Do they have to be hanging form wires? It was a bit scary on windy days. Why are they not fixed on metal bars or something?
I have been to Seattle. My American friend said they are like that everywhere in America.
Answers:
They have to be flexable so that if something hits them they will return to the original position.
red = stop
yellow = slow down
green =go
your friend needs to get out more.
they are not like that everywhere.
i dont think they are normal wires.. probably reinforced steel wires or somthing.. in NJ its like that.. in NY i see its on metal poles
Wisconsin has metal poles, Michigan has wires. It seems to be a state-by-state thing.
I'm sure if they were not safe they would not use them. Often people knock down the poles in car accidents, so those aren't any better.
I would say the ones in Ventura County particularly Oxnard & Camarillo are taken cared of. Some of them have even videos to record if you have violated traffic rules.
They are the funny bit a found was the turning!! even if the light wa red you had the right to turn! It is a good idea, if we were to implement it in here although I found their driving to be irresponsible and all and all awful the under-taking, driving in the rain etc.!
I was just in America and the traffic lights were like that and when you have the shade thing down to keep the sun out of your eyes you can't see the traffic lights!
No, Seattle is not that typical.
In California, most traffic lights are attached to grey poles. In New York, they use yellow poles.
Traffic lights like everything, is constantly being redesigned as the climate, traffic & weather requires. Unlike many foreign countries, we have had traffic lights for a long time. The "wires" as you call them work quite well and replaced the traffic light on the corner of the street. The wire system allowed for many lanes of traffic. It put the lights (multiple) over the lane so that traffic could turn left before anyone could go through the intersection. Then left turns are stopped and through traffic goes. The Arm can be a problem when snow & ice builds up, especially when the street is 5 lanes or more wide. So even the newest design of the Arm is being re-engineered.
As a city or town grows, the traffic lights will be upgraded but this is a costly expense when you start counting all the traffic lights you will find in one city or town.
For a laugh. you should go to any town, get up on a high point at night and chuckle when you see the different shades of street lights. Pink tinge, white glare, blue white, yellow. it is all progress or what was the new thing at the time it was installed.
