A top tip is try and find a place to live that is near work. Traffic is really bad and it use to take us an hour to get to work everyday.
It is good to get in touch with the British embassay who will have contacts of british clubs where you can meet others. However, my top tip would be.get to know some local people and experience arabia and the culture rather than a brit abroad experience. It's a really facinating place.
And finally be careful what nightclubs you go to..many of the girls may expect payments if you know what i mean!!
It's somewhere in Asia, near Korea I think. They speak Dubaiese and there favourite food is Pot Noodle. That's about all I know.
i havent but my dad did he moved to the philippines awhile back, got married to his maid!my advise dont do that, from what i can recall there aint much to do sorry
My friend teaches out there and she loves it. She said that most of the bars have deals on booze during the week so it isn't as expensive as people assume. She's always jetting off to various luxury hotels nearby and short breaks to other emirates. She mixes with other ex-pats (there's lots of them!) and has a great social life. She went there knowing no-one and now has lots of friends. Good luck and hope it works out for you x x
yea my best friend is from there, the guy who lives with me wife use to live ther for 10 years and i have 2 friends, 24 and 27 (they don't know eachother) who have both moved there within the past 2 years. They both love it there and say the people are very friendly. Email me later if u want and u can mabye talk to my friend on yahoo
Hi, I have never lived there but I have added a website for you.
It's a great forum for expats, there's a Middle East section and I am sure someone on there can help you.
Good luck x
Yes it is hot and expensive. Rents are skyrocking and I hope, your employment includes housing. Traffic is terrible. Traffic laws exist, but.as long as horn and breaks work, you might be fine. You just have to get used to around 85 different nationalies with different way of driving.
Shopping malls are just great. You will have a lot to discover. Beside all the hot spots you should visit, enjoy Jumeirah Beach.
If transportation is provided, take a 4W, otherwise you get stuck in the sand.
Medical care here is just great and compared to western standard cheap.
You will find all kind of food over here. Maybe food you even did not know that it exist. Pork and alcohol is kind of expensive. For having a drink, you have to go places conected to hotels.
If you are a smoker, then you are in heaven. You can smoke everywhere and cigarettes are cheap.
Living in the UAE is also a good opportunity to take weekendtrips to other ploaces. The Omani border is 2 hours away. Bahrain is close, to. Or you go and visit the other Emirates like i.e. the Garden city of UAE named Al Ain.
If you are an outgoing person, you will not stay alone for long. Dubai is a melting pot of all kind of nationalities.
You are a western male, 30 years old and single? You might not stay single for a long time.

Advice: Before you move here, get a little familiar with the local law and custom. Could be helpful, especially if you have to deal with Nationals. They are very nice and friendly people.
Hope this was a little help and you will enjoy your stay.
It certainly is hot. Booze is not really expensive, though. It is a great place to live. There is lots of construction going on at the moment, most of which will be done by 2010-2015 or so. It is a gorgeous city - from the bustling modern amenities to the relaxing ancient arabian districts of town. i just love it, couldnt ask for more. spas and hotels and restaurants and everything everywhere. love these areas: downtown dubai, jumeirah, deira, bur dubai
